Friday Night Fun Meet – A great time!
Twelve ROCS swimmers and 2 coaches headed to the Carlingwood YMCA last Friday, to compete with a small team from the Ottawa Y Olympians. It was a low-key fun meet that Coach Claudia noted, “ was an excellent learning opportunity for our small group, who had the experience of racing in a new venue, along with the attention of two coaches”. There were lots of parents from both clubs who showed up to cheer and encourage all the swimmers. The pizza social was a fun way to end the event for the families, - our sincere thanks to Liz McKeown the Meet Manager and all the OYO parents – we hope they’ll join us for our met on March 3rd!

"ROCing" in the New Year - with Stellar performances in Perth!

By: WWM-NB-CCS - Jan. 12, 2012

It was a long weekend, with freezing rain to hamper the trips back and forth - but the numerous best ever swims, along with the spectacular time-drops, brought smiles to the coaches and swimmers last weekend.  Thirteen area clubs competed in the Mike Brown meet, and ROCS swimmers achieved an impressive number of top 6 finishes. But it wasn’t just the placements that delighted the coaches – the swimmers did a great job of putting into place the tips and techniques they had worked on at the training camp.

Silver Group

From the Silver group, special congratulations to Alex Auster, Sophie Baremberg, and Rebecca Wang for qualifying and racing in the finals Saturday night, to Lauren Mouser who swam her first 400 IM and 800 Free (the latter being very close to provincial standard!), and to Lianna Grace for reaching the Provincial standard in the 800 Free!

Academy Red and Academy Black

From the Academy group, special congratulations to Julian Mollot-Hill and Dylan Phee for their very impressive performances in all events!, and a thank you to Camryn Kealey, who despite a disappointing ski injury, joined the team to cheer them on! (Best wishes for a speedy recovery!)

Congratulations also to the following swimmers who placed in the top 6 during prelims but were unable to compete in finals: Owen Saunders, Marshall Steele, and Tyson Steele.

Relay Congrats!

ROCS had two relays in the meet, and both had very exciting swims to achieve 3rd place.

In the girls 10 and under relay: Katie Phee, Shannon Phee, Nakita Steele and Jordan Storm swam a very strong race to finish 3rd of 8 teams! (And these girls are not yet 10!)

While the 11 and 12 year-old boysDylan Phee, Daniel Nikoula, Jake Storm, and Greg Pope also placed third, swimming an exciting race against the 2nd place team!

Award Ceremonies

As often happens, the awards were not presented at the meet, so ROCS held an impromptu ceremony on Monday after practice, which Dan Phee was able to capture with his camera!  Coach Nico had a box full of medals and ribbons, so it was a fun opportunity for the team to cheer each other – and they did just that!

Special Award – The coaches awarded Dylan Phee a ticket to Olympic Trials, for winning the “best turns” of the meet award.  Turns and under water work were one of the skills that the training camp focused on, and while many of the athletes performed well in this area, Dylan did an exceptional job throughout all of his races!

Congratulations to all of the swimmers – undoubtedly the work at the Christmas Training camp paid off, and also to Coaches Claudia, Nico and Graham – on such a successful meet!

(Note: Olympic Trials – Saturday March 31rst – ROCS Competitive team will be attending – more information to follow.)
