Hungary, World Junior Pentathlon Championships
…As are our national pentathletes, one of who is our own ROCS member, Mathea Stevens. As National Coach of this team, John Hawes, along with Mathea, just returned from the UIPM Junior World Championships in Szekesfehérvar, Hungary, where 77 male and 68 female athletes representing 31 countries were also in attendance.
In her first year as a Junior competitor, Mathea had a great competition, ending the Semi-finals in 11th position (of 34), which qualified her for the Finals. Competing in that many events over a period of several days is a significant challenge, and Coach John was very proud of the performances of both Mathea and her team mate Melanie McCann, noting that this was a great showing and experience for these ladies at this point in their careers. Congratulations Mathea and John!
A report of the women’s Semi-Final event (from www.pentathloncanada.ca) is below.

McCann has finished 3rd in semi final B, while Stevens finished 11th in the same semi. Both athletes said they were pleased they have made the finals and are looking to better their performances from the semis.
Semis – In Their Own Words
"After an average swim, the fencing started off very well with hardly any defeats. By about halfway it made a turn for the worst, but because of my strong start, I still finished with a score above 50%. This put me into 20th position going into the combined event. I shot well which allowed me to easily run into 11th to qualify for the final on Saturday." Mathea Stevens.
