“Congrats and Good Luck to our EOSA Qualifiers!”
The Eastern Ontario Regional Swimming Championships for short-course swimming, are being held at the Nepean Sportsplex this weekend. Seventeen swimmers from the competitive program have made the qualifying standards for this meet, and will be competing with the areas best in events during the weekend. Congratulations to these swimmers! All members of the club are invited to cheer on the team – the meet details are under Schedules/Meets on rocs.ca

ROC “STARS” at OTTAWA SPORTS AWARDS
The Annual Ottawa Sports Awards were held at Algonquin College last week, and once again ROCS was well represented! Congratulations to Melanie McCann (Pentathlon Award Winner), Joanna Brown (Triathlon Award Winner), and Matt Hawes (Winner of the Swimming Award). Hats off to Coach John, last year’s winner of the “Brian Kilrea Lifetime Achievement Award” in coaching, who has contributed to the impressive achievements of all three of these award winners!

Friday Night Fun Meet – A great time!
Twelve ROCS swimmers and 2 coaches headed to the Carlingwood YMCA last Friday, to compete with a small team from the Ottawa Y Olympians. It was a low-key fun meet that Coach Claudia noted, “ was an excellent learning opportunity for our small group, who had the experience of racing in a new venue, along with the attention of two coaches”. There were lots of parents from both clubs who showed up to cheer and encourage all the swimmers. The pizza social was a fun way to end the event for the families, - our sincere thanks to Liz McKeown the Meet Manager and all the OYO parents – we hope they’ll join us for our met on March 3rd!

"ROCing" in the New Year - with Stellar performances in Perth!
Fresh off the Christmas Training Camp, ROCS athletes travelled to the Mike Brown Meet in Perth on the weekend, to reap the rewards of their hard work. Special congratulations to EOSA qualifiers - Jordan Storm (Academy Black), Julian Mollot-Hill (Academy Red), and to Lianna Grace (Silver) for achieving a Provincial Qualifying time in the 800 Free, and to Naomi Cappuccino for achieving her level 2 Officials standing!

278Nov. 22, 2011TuesdayBest Times, Amazing Time Drops, & EOSA Records at Fall Invitational!Last month the ROCS competitive swimmers eased into the meet season with a four-hour competition at Brewer Pool. It was a great way for new members along with veteran athletes to start the short-course season, and coaches were pleased with the debut swims! This past weekend, four weeks after the inaugural meet, 39 ROCS athletes faced a much bigger challenge – swimming six events over a two-day period at the nearby Nepean Sportplex. The results were impressive – and Coach Claudia was very proud of the team for their swims and support of each other – and congratulates the swimmers, along with Coaches Graham and Nico on a job well-done!278none

225Nov. 23, 2010TuesdayROCS Goes to Beaconsfield!Last Friday night several families drove to Beaconsfield, Quebec so swimmers would be ready for their 7:00 am start! Thirteen athletes participated in the Development meet, while eight more teammates joined them for the Provincial competition at noon. Venturing into a traditionally strong swimming region in Quebec, meant some stiff competition from the 4 local teams, but Coaches Claudia and Nico were very pleased with the well-run meet and ROCS’s performance in and out of the pool! 82May. 28, 2009ThursdayGO Meet - Unexpected Entries & AWARD Winning ResultsOriginally scheduled as a Saturday afternoon event for 14 ROCS swimmers, the last-minute shut-down of the Blackfly meet in Deep River resulted in an increased presence for ROCS! With appreciation to Meet Manager Peter Champagne, 6 swimmers from the club went from the “beach” to the pool at Ottawa U for a 7:30 warm-up on Sunday morning. According to coaches Claudia and Dale, it was an exciting 2 days, with many best-ever swims, medal placings, and in the pursuit of standards - some “oh so close” performances! Congratulations all!82none
81May. 25, 2009MondayBlackfly - The Meet that was ….Not to Be!On Thursday ROCS families who were participating in the Blackfly Meet learned that due to a pool leak in Deep River, both the schedule and venue had changed. Being flexible, and sympathetic to the organizing committee, families headed off Saturday morning to Lamure Beach in Deep River for a BBQ lunch, where for the second year in a row, ROCS swimmers had a wonderful time, and were last off the beach. However, while the weather co-operated, the venue at Petawawa did not, and the Blackfly meet went from being re-scheduled, to shut-down!81none
80May. 22, 2009FridayDeep River - Blackfly Revisions and Directions!The pool at Deep River has "sprung" a leak, creating havoc for the meet organizers, but the base pool at Petawawa has come through, so both the BBQ and the meet are a go! 78May. 20, 2009WednesdayElite Amateur Triathlete – Tenille Hoogland - Moving on up!Through “potholes, wicked winds and changing temperatures” Tenille Hoogland, part of the ROCS Triathlete group, competed along with 25 other “Elite Women” in the “Boathouse International Triathlon” in Oklahoma last weekend. Scheduled just a few weeks after the Florida competition, the Oklahoma event is part of the ITU Pan America Cup race series for Elite Triathletes.78none
77May. 12, 2009TuesdayFestival of Spring - Major Event!Last weekend ROCS swimmers, who had made the qualifying standards, participated in the Festival of Spring event hosted by the Nepean-Kanata Barracudas. There were 18 teams at this meet, by far the largest event of the season, with clubs coming from the Toronto area, the north (Timmins) and even out of province (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia & Edmonton, Alberta) to provide a deep field of competitors. Coach Claudia has provided some highlights, noting that “overall, it was a very positive experience for ROCS swimmers and coaches”!77none

Congratulations to our newest EOSA Championships qualifiers Dorothy Apedaile and Ruth Juggoo-Webber. This brings the total number of qualifiers for this upcoming long course meet to 15! The ROCS had a best time percentage of over 60% lifetime best times from all events swum at the Festival, excellent considering it was an in season meet and we didn’t taper! This is also notable as 6 team members came down sick and had to scratch from events over the course of the three day meet.none
